Michael Czerny: A Priest with Jewish Roots

The Czerny family has been spending time in Little Harbour since the 1970s. Brothers Bob and Michael Czerny will present a documentary film about the life of Cardinal Michael Czerny, set in their birthplace, Czechia.

Discover the remarkable Czerny family, long-time members of our Little Harbour community. A recent Czech Television documentary, Cardinal Michael Czerny: A Priest with Jewish Roots, traces their journey from Brno in 1948 to Nova Scotia, their resilience through wartime persecution, and their life in Canada.
The film explores Wini’s survival of prison and concentration camp, the family’s immigration story, their years in Montreal, and Michael’s path to becoming a Jesuit dedicated to human rights and social justice. It also highlights the Czernys’ deep ties to our area—garlic, mushrooms, weaving, rug-hooking, and warm hospitality.
After the screening, Michael and his brother Bob will join in discussion. A chance to celebrate the richness that “comes from away” into our community.
