🖼️ MANTON NICKERSON Painting Exhibition at the GRAND BALLROOM

Renowned artist, Manton Judah Nickerson, was one of Canada’s greatest marine painters. He sometimes signed his paintings J. Manton Nickerson.

Manton was born in Clark’s Harbour in 1871. He was deaf at birth and attended a specialized school in Halifax from 1884-1891. Upon graduation he returned home. After marrying, the family moved to Halifax in 1916, where he worked as a house painter.

Manton started painting seascapes and ships while away at school. He is recognized as a self taught artist.

In 1925 he returned to Clark’sHarbour intent on making a living painting canvasses, not houses.

A specially curated selection of paintings have been assembled and will be shown in the Grand Ballroom of the Old Oddfellows Hall. The ballroom also houses two large original murals.
